Weight loss and maintenance is no laughing matter. Today, 60% of American adults need to lose weight, and many of them feel defeated by their struggles. In addition, for many people, keeping weight off after weight loss is even more difficult than losing it in the first place.

These difficulties are the reason that sales of diet aids are so consistently high. People who are trying to lose weight are constantly looking for any help they can find to increase their weight loss and maintenance success.

If you need to lose weight, it’s critical that you make changes to your diet and your physical activity level. The following suggestions can help you to begin shedding pounds without resorting to extreme dieting measures:

• Substitute fish and chicken for beef and pork most days of the week.

• Eliminate white flour from your diet. Eat whole grains, such as 100% whole wheat bread instead.

• Eliminate refined sugar from your diet. Use artificial sweeteners and natural sweeteners like honey instead.

• Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh fruits and vegetables will provide more anti-oxidants and fiber, along with fewer calories than processed vegetables, particularly those in sauce.

• Increase your fiber intake - Extra fiber will help you feel full longer, helping you to reduce the number of calories you’re eating without feeling deprived.

• Watch the fat- Reduce the saturated fat in your diet. Avoid any food with hydrogenated fats or trans fats. Get your fats from olive oil, canola oil, fish and nuts.

• Get 30 minutes of aerobic exercise most days of the week. Walking is a great way to get in your exercise, and it’s convenient because you can do it anywhere. You should also get in strength training 3 times a week for 30 minutes each session. Strength training will help you build muscle, which will help you burn more calories even when resting.

Making these changes should allow you to lose weight gradually without feeling hungry. Only when you make changes that you can sustain for the long term will you be able to take off the weight and keep it off.

However, while it’s critical to understand that diet and exercise will always be the keys to maintaining a healthy weight, it’s always nice to find little tricks that make losing weight and keeping it off just a bit easier.

One substance that does seem to hold promise in weight loss is green tea. Many studies have shown that the consumption of green tea along with a healthy diet can help you lose more weight than dieting alone.

It is believed that green tea’s potent anti-oxidants combined with the caffeine in the tea help speed up the metabolism and burn fat. In addition, some studies have even shown that green tea can inhibit the absorption of dietary fat, meaning that less of the fat you eat ends up as body fat.

However, one interesting study suggests that green tea’s effectiveness may be negated if you consume too much other caffeine in your diet. A study conducted by Maastricht University in The Netherlands attempted to show how green tea would affect participants attempting to maintain a recent weight loss. It showed less promising results regarding the consumption of green tea, particularly when the participants were high consumers of caffeine overall.

In this study, 104 overweight and moderately obese men and women were put on a low calorie diet for 4 weeks. During the four week period, the participants lost an average of 7.5% of their body weight. During the 13 week maintenance period, the participants were fed either green tea or a placebo. The participants did not show statistically different results between the group receiving green tea and the group receiving the placebo.

However, the study did show that participants who had overall high caffeine consumption regained more of the weight they lost than those who had a lower overall caffeine consumption.* When you consider these results compared with other studies where additional caffeine consumption was restricted, and a correlation between the use of green tea and weight loss was observed, it suggests that excess caffeine use may negate green tea’s possible positive effects.

If you look at the entire body of research on green tea’s ability to enhance weight loss, it seems very promising, in spite of the results of this particular study. And, the good news is, that even if green tea doesn’t help you lose weight, it’s very healthy for you and has no side effects.

So, you have nothing to lose by trying green tea as a weight loss supplement. Green tea’s anti-oxidants may hold significant power in helping you avoid diseases like cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. In addition, regular consumption of green tea may reduce the signs of aging and help you live a longer and healthier life. And, in addition, you may find your weight loss efforts easier and more effective than ever.

I haven't done anything extreme over last 3 months–just more exercise, protein, & vegetables with less junk. (lost ca. 16-17 lbs; 12 wks.) Surprisingly I'm in top 3 in so far since so many others gave up and stopped doing much.I want to beat (& shock) bragging, hulky guy. So it's Sat. night, weigh-in is anytime Mon….just want to do what I can to help-shd I drink lotsa water now & hope it "flushes" more out? caffeine? green tea? coffee? should I weigh in after exercise? someone said unless you sweat like a –well, whatever, that weighing yourself first thing in the morning is lowest weight even if you exercise and fast for a while that day & weigh in later….any wrestlers, flight attendants, boxers, weight-loss contestants kind enough to give me advice? I'm kinda bloated now but don't want to go out and buy a diuretic. Top 3 contestants get free gym memberships of varying lengths and free sessions with trainer so it's worth a push now.I'll report results hereTues.! THANK YOU!
I got all psyched up to get weighed today so I called the gym to make sure it has to be today. They say the computerized scale is broken so the weigh-in is tomorrow, any time, instead….thanks for encouragement; will see in a day or so what happened relative to the others–still have a shot at this…

yes drink LOTS (but pace yourself) of water and avoid caffeine, and SODIUM of any kind because salt /sodium and caffeine actually make you retain water.
good luck!
great job!

For most people the holidays like Christmas, Chanukah and New Years are special occasions that allow families to reunite and spend quality time together. Accompanying the festivities are often parties and dinners that can result in weight gain. Many people often seek ways to reduce weight after the holidays are over.

This is not a time for panic: crash diets and extreme exercise programs almost always fail and should be avoided. Weight loss should always be part of a sensible balanced program of exercise and diet and most experts agree that moderation and consistency are better than excess.

Strategies to Prevent Weight Gain

To help prevent weight gain it is important to assess your behavior and environment and adopt healthy habits

The amount and types of foods you eat, and your physical activity habits are important factors in controlling weight. The environment in which you live may also contribute to the adoption of poor eating or exercise habits. This is especially true in today’s society, which is dominated by speed and convenience.

For example, escalators, elevators and remote-control appliances make us less physically active and walking is less frequent than in prior years. Also, greater availability of foods that are high in calories, fat and added sugars, and larger portion sizes promote unhealthy eating behaviors.

In addition, reputable organizations, government agencies and independent researchers agree on the importance of adopting healthy habits to prevent weight gain.

Effective weight management involves behavior modification which is a lifelong commitment and includes at least two components:

Healthful eating in accordance with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, emphasizing a reduction in total calories, a lowered fat consumption, and an increase in vegetables, fruits and whole grains, is an essential part of weight control.

Increased frequent and regular physical activity of at least moderate intensity is also required.

Health professionals also recommend a prescription for health and weight loss that includes:

• Moderate physical activity on most days of the week of at least 30 minutes per day for adults and 60 minutes per day for children.

• Eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and reasonable portion sizes at home, in schools, at worksites, and in communities.

• Drinking at least eight glasses of pure water.

In addition to exercise and a healthy diet, the use of Wu long tea (also spelled oolong tea or wu long tea) is growing in popularity as a wholesome and flavorful way to limit weight gain.

Will drinking Wu long tea really help lose weight?

For many, Wu long tea is a helpful addition to a comprehensive weight loss program. Wu long tea tastes good, contains health benefits that lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels and a cup of Wu long tea in the morning can serve as a reminder of a healthy life style.

Wu Long tea has become a premium weight loss tea that many are discovering for the first time. If you have never enjoyed the great taste and slimming health benefits it is known for, you are truly missing an incredible opportunity. Originating in the Fujian Province of China, Wu Long tea has gradually been introduced into Western culture. Of all the tea, Wu Long represents the Chinese culture best.

Those who enjoy the flavor and rich aroma unique to slimming Wu Long tea truly understand the art of drinking it - slowly and delicately. Using a tiny teapot and small teacup, they are inheriting a rich tradition, started by the Chinese generations ago. The health benefits of Wu long tea are many:

• Rich in Theaflavin, Tea Polysaccharides and Tea Catechin, antioxidants that assist in the reduction of plaque in the arteries, in lowering cholesterol and in producing slimming effects.

• Helps regulate blood sugar levels for diabetics.

• Burns 2.5 times more calories than Green Tea, ideal for weight loss.

• Promotes clear, youthful looking skin.

Scientific studies have established that tea is high in health-promoting polyphenols that protect us against cancer and other diseases. Wu long tea is particularly high in “polymerized polyphenols” which according to recent studies helps to increase energy expenditure.

One recent study found that energy expenditure increased by 10% for a period of 2 hours after drinking wu long tea. This was significantly higher than the energy expenditure observed after drinking other types of tea.

Another study found that wu long tea can suppress lipid metabolism which has the effect of suppressing fatty accumulation and body weight increases. The study concludes that long-term consumption of wu long tea is beneficial for the suppression of diet induced obesity.

Health-promoting compounds such as polyphenols and catechins are present in all types of tea, but hand picked wu long tea is the best source because the pickers are selecting the best leaves from the tea plant. Machine harvesting is indiscriminate and should be avoided - older leaves and twigs are harvested along with the newer leaves.

Wu long tea is not a miracle cure for weight problems. Weight loss involves following a sensible, healthy diet, and a change in lifestyle to include an adequate amount of exercise. Wu long tea however, can give you the extra boost to help in your weight loss plans, but it must be used as part of an overall strategy to improve your living habits.

Enjoy the holidays and the festivities involved, don’t undertake crash weight loss programs and adopt a healthy lifestyle including Wu long tea!

I am 16 years old 12 stone, 5 ft 6.
If I did Kate's cardio combat dvd (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kates-Cardio-Combat-Rhydian-Lewis/dp/B00007J34U)
from Monday to Friday once a day.
And on Saturday and Sunday I did in addition to Kate's Cardio Combat another workout dvd called Coronation street: funk fit (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Coronation-Street-Funk-Tina-OBrien/dp/B0006TNAE8).

Combined with a maximum of 900 calories a day, 2 cups of green tea and metabo extreme.
How much weight do you think I could lose and what time scale?
if 900 calories is unhealthy, what should my calorie intake be to significantly cause weight loss?

i lost 3 stone from a healthy diet in 3 months!!!

eat around 1200 cals, Healthy FOOD only, 8 glasses of water + fruit and veg.
You will want 3 healthy meals a day + snacks inbetween.

Not sure if you realise but with the little food and lots of exercise it wont take long for your body to go into starvation mode (your body will grip the fat for dear life) so you wont lose anything.

Be safe
Good Luck xx

I used to have an eating disorder but am completly recovered now. I go to the gym twice a week for one hour and according to the machines ( i know they arent 100% accurate) i burn between 850 calories and 950 calories each session. Other than going to the gym my activity is moderate but nothing extreme. I eat about 1800 calories per day and a usual day of eating is as follows:
Breakfast: bowl of all bran with semi skimmed milk and 2 nectarines
Lunch:about 300 calories..usually a light subway sandwich or noodles or a salad or meal deal from boots.
Snack: a lemon muffin or protein bar or possibly a nakd all natural bar.
Dinner: about 300 calories, usually noodles and chicken or fish or replacing the noodles with vegetables.
Dessert; either three activia fat free yohgurts or an icecream and yohgurt (250 calories)
Supper: a bowl of bran flakes with semi skimmed milk and a piece of fruit.
I drink 2 cups of green tea and 2 litres of water per day as well as 3 diet cokes.

My problem is i am always hungry and have cravings for different foods always but i am scared to eat what i want due to the fear of weight gain. I want to up my calories intake and baisiacally eat what i want when i want but not necessarily put on weight. I know the only way to do this is by uping my activity by going to the gym more maybe??
But can anyone tell me how much activity i should be doing to not put on weight (but i dont mind putting on weight in muscle) and how much i should be eating for that amount of activity?

Other peoples experience and what activity and food they eat would be helpful to. Thanks for your help xxx
I currently weigh 50.5 kilos and i am 168 cm in height. I know i am slightly under weight but i dont want to gain any.

Hiya,

You really need to eat more protein. This will make you feel more full up and stop your cravings. Your eating way too much sugar/starchy foods with your bran flakes, bread at lunch then noodles. Carbs and starchy foods play havoc on your blood sugar levels, they shot up after eating something then it crashes so that when you feel tired after eating, full up and it makes you crave the same food again. Not good.

If you eat more protein as well, this will help you build up some muscle. If your a girl, do not be scared about lifting heavy weights as this is the ONLY PROVEN way to keep fat under control. You will not get bulky either as we do not have testosterone. Stuff you should be doing in the gym are, bench press, dead lifts, squats, kettle bells, pull ups. These work ALL your muscles, trust me all I have done for the past 2 months are the above and my body has completely changed for the better. Check on youtube for videos on how to do them.

So for more protein try and have eggs in the morning, stick to a chicken / tuna salad at lunch. Then dinner, salmon, chicken with lots of green veg. Snacks have nuts like almonds and maybe get some protein shake to fill you up more. Once you start cutting out the bread, bran flakes, noodles you will find it hard as you’ll crave them so much but this only last a few days, so give it a week or so and you will start to feel so much better. More energy, fuller etc.

Hope this helps

Right now I have extremely swollen glands in my throat…..the doctor prescribed Vicoden, plus I am taking extra strength tylenol, Aleve, AND robutessin, plus drinking lots of green tea…….is this too much? Dangerous combination?

The pain is so extreme, the Vicoden alone barely helps…..by taking all these drugs I basically feel really drunk and wheezy and am able to sleep……
Right now I am waiting for blood tests to be completed to find out why my glands are swollen……the doctor also gave me a shot of antibodies today…….
If I have an infection, the antibodies should cure it….but if it viral, the antibodies won't help at all…….

Do not take any other type of tylenol while you are taking the Vicodin. You can however, take the Vicodin along with Advil or ibupropen. Do not mix in cold meds without checking with your dr first.

Hope you feel better soon.

Sorry this is long =( bear with me please.

Hi, well I decided to change my lifestyle (atleast for the next 6 months =P) to a much healthier one. I started on the 1st of july and weighed myself on the 31st and I lost 15 pounds. My goal is to eat 800 calories a day (but they usually make it to around 900 because of fruit snacks and stuff) and for that month i spent 2 hours a day 5 days a week on avg in the gym. My starting weight was 279 lb, im 6′3″ and 17 years old.

Weight was never really an issue for me till lately, because of exam stress and family problems, i gained about 10 lb in a month, and only then did clothes start looking bad on me, i always considered myself lucky, because i was overweight but still never lagged behind in terms of clothes and style, mainly because my body never reflected my weight. Only after my exams did I start to notice my clothes looking bad on me, so I slowly started controlling my appetite for about 2 weeks, then I started the diet.(Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t look thin or anything, but I didnt look 260lb either, i looked like a person who needed to lose 20lb at the most)

Anyways, to make a long story short, I burn about 800 calories in the gym, and I eat around 900 calories a day while still feeling satisfied, I’m not crash dieting or anything, I’m just choosing low calorie food, e.g for breakfast I have a single slice of whole grain bread with 99-percent fat free turkey (2 slices, 30 calories each) with lettuce and low fat mayo (15 calories per spoonful). For dinner it’s pretty much standard between grilled chicken Fillet with veggies or grilled fish Fillet with veggies (Totalling around 400 calories). And I have another one of those turkey sandwiches for lunch, and some fruit snacks whenever i feel hungry. I take 100-percent DRA multi vitamins & minerals. As for drinks its usually 2 cans of diet coke a day and 3 litres of water, and a cup of green tea a day on avg. ( Soda because it makes me feel full for atleast and hour or so =P planning on quiting it after i finish.

I was expecting that a person of my weight should be losing much more weight, I’m weighing everything I eat and then using the calorieking.com website to calculate the calories I’m eating.Am I doing something wrong? Anyway to speed up the process?I was trying to reach 215 pounds by 1st october, as my uni starts a few days later, and I dont wanna be labeled anything which i can improve on.

My target weight is 180 lb by december 12th (my bday =D) and I’ve already dropped a size, so im happy about that, I was just thinking that with all the effort im putting in I should have lost more weight. Theres a history of obesity on my fathers side of the family, and from my mothers side, they seem to have ALOT of digestive and heart/BP problems, but no diabetes on either side.

Also I was wondering what the test for your metabolism/rate of metabolism is called? and has anyone tried the blood type diet, it seems a bit extreme for me, and i doubt i can stick to eating 3 ounces of chicken as my only meat for the whole week, but hey, if it’ll speed things up, I dont mind trying it on ramadan next month, I’m gonna be fasting till 6 oclock anyway =P

And I know this is kinda lame, but any diet pills that can speed up the calorie burning process, I dont want any of those enzymes pills that dont allow carbs and fats to be absorbed, coz trust me they DONT work =)
I can't drink milk, I don't like the way it tastes, and I get digestive problems after it, I start feeling really heavy and have to bend my back forwards a little because my intestines hurt, and the example of my diet above isn't my daily regimen, I do eat cereal, omellettes cinnamon apples for breakfast ( don't know if that actually exists, but what i do is I cut 2 apples into 8 pieces and spread some cinnamon on them, and into the microwave for a minute YUMMY!) for dinner, I do sometimes grab a subway turkey 6inch sandwich, (273 clories woohoo =P) thx for the advice though =)
Thank you for all the suggestions, i'm aiming for 180 pounds so i have a bmi of 22, But I love the motivation your all giving me =) thanks for all the help, I'll keave the question open for a few more answers then pick my favorite one =)

I wrote this assuming you are male-
My hubby is 6′5 and 245 and I think he is looking healthy for the first time in his life. 180 will NOT look good on you, you will look like a bean pole. My hubby was 185 when we first started dating and I fattened him up really fast because he just always looked hungry to me. Anyway, the reason your weight loss seems so slow is probably because you are not that far from a healthy weight. And don’t mistake muscle weight for fat weight. If you have been working out, muscle is much heavier than fat so you are probably gaining muscle faster than you can lose the fat you’re expecting too.

Alter your diet just a bit- ADD calories, I am serious. Your body learns to store the extra fat it needs. You are not getting nearly enough calories for your size and your body is beginning to fight back. It will take every calorie you eat and try to store it because it is fighting so hard to maintain your weight. Once you add some calories, you will get more effective workouts. At that point, focus on getting in shape and not losing weight. You are a guy, and for guys it is easier to lose fat working out than dieting, and what guy doesn’t want to be ripped? You don’t see body builders obsessing because their weight is over standard guidelines, do you?

You want to feel good and look good. Stop worrying about your weight because it’s not going to be tattoo-ed on your forehead. Increase your calories, change up your workout routine so you constantly see change, stop stepping on the scale and start just looking at yourself in the mirror.

I'm 17 and have terrible undereye circles. I get about 10+ hours of sleep a night, eat healthy, don't smoke, and not stressed. I try to cover them with makeup, because if I don't, then believe me you won't want to look at me, but they're still visible. I am a teenage with a limited budget, and want to try the $100 medications, but can't afford them. I know about cucumbers, PH, and green tea, but trust me - they won't work. I don't know what to do!!

Sounds like possible iron deficiency. My bff is anemic and has these circles despite healthy eating and sleeping habits. Try taking a daily multi-vitamin that has iron in it. They are cheap and easy to come by (any grocery or drugstore has a vitamin aisle, right!) Can you afford to have a doc take a look at your hemoglobin level? If it's low, that definitely means you need iron in your diet and would explain the circles.

Good luck & God bless!

There are 4 types of bottles and I don’t understand what the difference is in all of them- Extreme AcaiBerry, AcaiBerry Detox, AcaiBerry Green Tea Fusion, and Acai Cleanse 300 (this is the one I got from my e-mail for a free trial on from Lifescript). So, what’s the difference and which is better to use?

I can tell you right off the bat, that I’ve heard some negative reviews about Acai Cleanse and AcaiBerry Detox. The Cleanse is said to cause a bit of digestive discomfort include bloating and abdominal cramping (as well as excessive pooping). Word on the street is that the Detox doesn’t have that much acai in it. Detox users reported feeling far less energetic than when they used Extreme Acai, and little to no weight loss.

I’ve gotten mixed reviews about Green Tea Fusion. It works for some people but not for others. Since it’s not 100% acai, it probably has only minimal concentrations of both acai and green tea. You could try it, but it’s not the one I recommend.

I’ve yet to hear a negative report on Extreme Acai. Everyone who uses it reports feeling better, extra energy, and a loss of several pounds of fat over the course of the first month of use. Extreme Acai has helped me to stake awake and alert all day long, and has improved my digestive system noticeably.

Go ahead an order a free trial of Extreme Acai from the source link below. I haven’t tried gaming the system yet, but I’ve heard there’s a way to get a couple free trials by using different order information… maybe you can get a couple months worth of free trials all in one shot.
