Can I brew kombucha with the cultures I got from a drink I bought?
21.September, 2008
I'm brewing it with green tea and sugar as instructed, using the live cultures from a drink I bought as "starters."
Will this work? Any tips?
I don't know squat about kombucha, but the thread below is a how-to and I think they discuss starting from bottled kombucha. There are a lot of other kombucha threads on those forums as well, so if you do a search for it, you'll come up with more info.

is it normal to feel kinda high on kombucha?
19.September, 2008
I got this green kombucha, from the health food store thinking it was some sort of green tea, boy was I wrong it tasted like vinegar. But I gaged it down. I thought I was just imagining it, but I'm positive that I was high on it. It just makes me feel so good
It is called "green tea" kombucha because the fermentation was started in green tea. All kombucha is vinegary and all has a tiny bit of alcohol (less than 0.5%). If you are a tea-totaler and drank a large amount you might have gotten a slight buzz. If you're that sensitive to alcohol you will get the same effect from an over-ripe banana.
Kombucha is good for your digestion because it is a fermented food. It also alkalanizes your blood, which might contribute to increased energy. Many larger health food store sell it in flavors that are a bit more palatable. Read about it here:http://www.gtskombucha.com/

Kombucha Tea?
19.September, 2008
Every time I make Kombucha Tea I use the same recipe, black tea as a base, brown sugar, and of coarse the mushroom.
Are there any other variations of the tea? Could I use green tea as the base? and if so would the benifits from the tea still be there?
I've never made Kombucha myself, but I work in a cafe where it is served. Our basic Kombucha is made from oolong tea, which is what you're probably using, but we also have a green tea variation. Most of the goodness from Kombucha tea comes from the cultures of microorganisms which degrade it anyway and not from the actual tea itself.
Bottom line: drink Kombucha for the digestive benefits it brings, but if you want the antioxidants and EGCG, stick with straight-up green tea. Both are yummy anyway.
