Hello.
My girlfriend wants to lose weight fast and really badly. She wants also to get a tummy tuck next year. So she wants to lose as much weight as she can before then.

She is taking green tea capsules, vitamins, probiotics but is only eating 500 calories a day (if that!). How much can she lose doing this? Is this healthy even for a short while?

She just wants to do this until she hits a certain weight, then she is gonna stop and maintain at eating 1200 cals/day. What do you think?

Oh and right now she is 213lbs. 5'1

What she is doing is very dangerous. Not getting the proper calories will lead to dehydration and malnutrition. Her electrolytes (sodium, potassium etc.) will go crazy. The electrolytes deficiencies can lead to death. She needs a proper diet and exercise to lose the weight gradually.

There are better and healthier ways to lose weight. She will feel weak and tired if this goes on for over a week. What most people don't realize, it is not a "diet", it is a lifestyle change in the way you eat. Eat foods at it's most original state, stay away from fast foods, sauces, anything with sugar, cut down on salt. I am afraid that if she does this diet, she will find herself in the same position only with more fat than what she started with.

She should start eating 1200 a day NOW. 500 calories per day is not enough to function properly. It's a myth that the fewer calories you eat, the more you'll lose; all that will happen is that her body will go into starvation mode and only conserve her weight MORE.

If she really wants to lose weight the healthy way, she should think about exercise, not starving herself. Losing weight is about changing your lifestyle; it's a long-term commitment. There's a reason why quick-fixes don't work. Suggest that she try joining Weight Watchers. It really works wonders.

400 calories is not enough she needs to at least double it or she will become undernourished. Yes diet by all means but at 400 calories she is putting her life at risk. Please encourage her to love herself as she is. Yes be thinner but not at the risk of dying. To do it slowly is the real way to become thin for life doing it fast shuts down the body and it goes into starvation mode and the weight doesnt come off. Please find a dietitian and they can help.

It depends on how active she is. If she's not burning very many calories in a day, and she's eating healthy foods when she is eating, maintaining a balanced diet, and since she's taking vitamins. According to my Doctor, she's just fine.

Eating only 500 cals is basically starvation for anyone. Not only will it be extremely hard to follow such a drastic and strich diet. Once she goes off of the diet she wll regain weight and more. The body will store more fat cells as a result of the starvation diet. She needs to find out how many calories she needs to cut to safely lose weight. Go to the following website at About.com

I suffer from Anorexia and I can't tell you how messed up my body is from not eating enough.

Hmm she is overweight for her height cuz i'm 5'1 and i certainly don't weigh that much.
But no, she's not doing it the HEALTHY way.
Her body is gonna store in more fat than she has because she is not eating healthy and she is basically starving herself.

I suggest she eats 6 times a day… healthy foods. Lots of vegatables, fruits, chicken and fish.
Make her drink more than 8 cups of water because that helps your meatabolism speed up by 3 percent and she needs to drink more water than the average person because she is overweight.
Water can also help her feel less hungry.

Be supportive and walk w/ her for at least a hour or go do some fun physical activity.

    Hope that helped!
    Good Luck!

500 calories a day is unhealthy, even for a short time. a year is plenty of time to lose the weight without short cuts. if she continues eating this little calories, she can become anorexic and have serious medical problems. also when she feels she has lost enough weight, she could be tempted to eat more then just 1200 calories a day causing her to gain most of her weight back. why don't you suggest signing up for the gym. i think you should take some kind of aerobics class with her so she knows you support her 100%. also if she gets discouraged, you can help her by keeping her motivated for her goal. instead of her eating 500 calories a day, she can more calories from things with less fat in it. like make soups and salads and fruits and vegetables. these things may not seem like it would fill you up, b ut if you eat a lot of it, it surprisingly feels like a full meal, and you lose weight while staying healthy. i hope this helps

That is what we call a crash diet!!

Just tell her to eat fresh foods, low in calories, fat, carbs and sugar and she'll be fine and still lose weight…..has she ever heard of working out? If she only eats 500 cal a day, she'll pass out.

No, no, no! She is starving herself. People always try to do these gimmicky things to lose weight when the answer to doing it is two simple rules. Diet, and exercise. Yes, in order to lose weight the human body needs to burn more calories than it takes in, however, food is the fuel we need to keep going. If she is only consuming 400 calories a day then she is not going to burn the fat; instead her body will start to use her carb and protein stores to provide the energy she needs to keep herself alive. When people starve themselves the body only uses the fat stored in her body as a last resort, and by then her muscles, her health and metabolism will be absolute crap.
She needs to jump start her metabolism, eat 1200 calories a day. Most of these need to be fruits, vegetables, and complex carbs. Stay away from processed sugars, flours and unhealthy fats. And she needs fat in her diet as well, many of the vitamins we ingest are fat-soluble, that is, they can only be digested if there is fat in what we eat. So she needs to eat nuts, avocados, and vegetable oils, olive oil is the best.

Eating this little is not healthy AT ALL, she's not helping herself she is killing herself slowly. Tell her to exercise three times weekly for 30 mins, even if it's just a walk. Drink a lot of water (absolutely NO SODA, or fruit juice which often contains as much sugar as soda) and eat healthy food. That's it. If she has more questions have her visit a dietitian at school or at a local health food store.
