teeth stains?
03.November, 2008
Im a smoker (in the process of giving up) and im an avid green tea fan. (I drink 9/10 cups a day).
I have noticed more recently that behind the bottom and front teeth are browning.
I use pearl drops and the arm and hammer new pro-enamel paste.
My teeth are really white at the front so maybe im not paying enough attention? I take good care of my teeth as far asim concerened though.
Any ideas for a good stain remover without having to visit a costly dentist?
thanks
Good luck to you with quitting smoking…NOT EASY….as far as your staining goes…I highly recommend plain ole baking soda ..just create a paste with water and apply it to your brush…it works great….you might have to do this virourously if your staining is bad….but NOT recommended on a daily basis…baking soda is far too rough to be used every day…it can cause tooth brush abrasion and root surface sensitivity….but its fine to use once a month or so to remove stubborn staining…and it works VERY well….I used it on myself to remove coffee staining..I would avoid any bleach products…I am just not an advocate of them…they make your teeth pourous like etched glass…and create sensitivity….I think they are fine for a wedding or a prom or special occasion…but not for constant long term use…Good luck to you!!

Glad that you will soon stop smoking. Get a clean from the dentist and go easy on the coffee.

I use sensodyne whitening toothpaste which is really good. Do you use a mouth wash as well as this can be brilliant for cleaning your teeth.

It would depend on how deep the stain is. If it is old over the counter whiteners may not work, you may need to start with a dentist. If you are a smoker I wouldn't waste the money if you will keep smoking. With different dark drinks, you should use a straw.. It will bypass the teeth most of the time, minimizing the staining

If you're from the UK - there's one toothpaste called 'Pearl Drops'

You should pick up some of that Listerine whitening mouthwash and then brush your teeth with that and then use a whitening paste. The concept is like when you wash your hair and do the lather, rinse , repeat. Try it for a week and you'll see results.

I used to smoke and I used to get this too - browning of the teeth behind the front ones. It is quite difficult to remove with just a toothpaste, even a stain removing toothpaste!! The reason being is because access is restricted in this area (in some people's cases) you are not actually brushing the area thoroughly/hard enough. Go to the dentist for a clean and polish - this will remove it. Also ask him to show you a technique for getting to these areas more thoroughly. Like I said i used to get build up of browning but a clean and polish always removed it. There is no need for expensive whitening treatments, etc. But then again it depends on how long the stains have been there. The longer they have been there the harder they are to remove, because the staining will be deeper.
I know you do not want to go to a dentist but I am afraid this is the only option. For a clean and polish it is not expensive - on the NHS it is £15.50 (or thereabouts)!!

Baking soda. You can either rub it directly on stains with your finger or add it to your toothbrush.
I have done both. I'm in preventive mode now, so I'll just dip my brush in a bowl of it after I've put on toothpaste and wet it.
If I have an active stain, I do the rubbing bit.
It's not gritty enough to hurt your teeth even if you brush with it every day.

Try this:

I use this, it may be a bit costly but I would highly recommend it, after about 2 uses I notice the difference.
