Are the benefits of Green Tea the same whether you drink premade iced teas or fresh brewed?
03.December, 2008
I started drinking Lipton Diet Green Tea with Citrus. While I do really enjoy the taste, the main reason I started drinking it was due to all the buzz about the health benefits of green tea. I don't really care for the taste of regular green tea from a bag or a tin. So, am I still getting all the health benefits of should I force myself to chug a cup of the fresh brewed stuff a couple times a day?
Brew green tea is the best. Avoid flavored or instant green tea if you want the full health benefits.
A 2007 report published by the US Department of Agriculture compares nearly 400 foods for their flavonoids content.
A original brew of green tea contains 127 milligrams of catechins.
Decaffeinated brewed green tea contains only 56 milligrams, less than half of the catechins found in an original brew.
Flavored brewed green tea has 43 milligrams.
Disappointingly, instant green tea has only 12 milligrams.
A 2005 study found that Lipton instant green tea has high fluoride content. Too much fluoride can be harmful.

Sadly, the health benefits of green tea are over-inflated. While there are benefits, you cannot possibly drink enough tea to see much effect.
Drink the tea because you like the taste. If you get a minor health effect, consider it a bonus. But do not drink because you think it's going to prevent cancer.

…well, i always have to think something fresh made surely is better…that lipton stuff has a lot of sugar, preservatives, etc…make yourself a cup of tea…it can be part of a soothing ritual…and people buy you really cool little tea cups and such, when you announce you've turned into a tea drinker!
peace, tammy

I think the benefits would be the same, just ECGC which helps activate metabolism. The only downfall is when you use lipton teas, they add sugar and HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup) which is pretty much the worse sugar ever. If you brew it yourself you know how much sugar(if any) is going in it. I think it's best with honey and lemon and maybe a splenda packet but that's it.
