Allergies later in life?
17.October, 2008
I am 23 right now. Growing up I was never allergic to anything. I had no reason to fear anything because nothing ever affected me. Lately I've developed a couple of allergies, and I'm wondering if there is some type of adult onset of allergies or something? Last month I had a brain MRI, and the moment a drop of the contrast touched my arm I started to scream from the pain (my arm felt like it was being held in a fire). I didn't even know it had touched me until they said they weren't doing anything (Brain MRI's are done with your head in a sort of "cage" laying on a table). Then last night I was having a Sobe Green Tea for refreshment for, um, let's just say I was married Sunday, ok? An hour later my throat started to close and it felt like I was being choked. My husband rushed me to Froedtert and they said I had an allergic reaction to the Green Tea (that was the only new thing I'd had). What can be causing this development in allergies?
all the new vaccines and new anti-germ war (germ-ex) going on is what doctors claim is the reason for the raise in food allergies.

We need to be exposed to germs to build up our immune defenses.
Maybe your house is too clean and you wash your hands too much.
Seriously. Im not kidding.

Unfortunately, you can develop allergies to anything at any time in your life. It's just a reaction of your immune system.

The allergies could be the result of stress. I had the same problem: ate strawberries all of my life until one fateful day I had a berry parfait and felt like I was choking to death. I went to see a doctor, and he told me that people typically develop these kind of allergies as a result of stress. Once you start taking better care of your psyche, your health will improve and the allergy will disappear.

You can develop allergies at any time in life…. they can also disappear at any time as well. I used to be able to eat all types of fruits and veggies. As I got older the more kinds I became allergic to. I can only eat processed or cooked fruits and veggies (applesauce, steamed asparagus). I can't even eat lettuce. I went to an allergy doc and he said that a lot of it comes from a reaction due to cross pollination with the fruit and certain pollens. For example apples crossed with mulberry create a major allergic reaction in some people. Talk to an allergy doctor, though. I feel your pain. The only thing to do is be super careful and always carry some liquid benadryl!!

Allergies often appear later in life. I didn't develop pollen or hay fever allergies until my 20's. I developed an allergy to egg yolks in my 30's. I've developed allergies to antibiotics that I took previously with no problems. It's very common for this to happen.
Your green tea allergy sounded like a serious one - you might want to consult with an allergist.

You might have always been allergic to it but never let it affect you and the stress from the recent marriage may have weakened your body enough so that these allergies you have always had but never noticed because of good health suddennly pop up due to your increased stress which lowers your normal immunity to these allergies.

First try to assertain the cause of Allergy. Then cure it, but try to avoid use of medicines if it is at early stage. I was feeling pollen allergy as this is common in islamabad during spring season. But i donot take medicines. This season i did not feel any problem. Take care in foods/surroundings if you have pollen or other allergy, even choosing a perfume. Doing five times Wadoo(Ablution) decreases the allergy problem as we take water in mouth and nose( two inhaliing way).
