Allergies later in life?
11.November, 2008
I am 23 right now. Growing up I was never allergic to anything. I had no reason to fear anything because nothing ever affected me. Lately I've developed a couple of allergies, and I'm wondering if there is some type of adult onset of allergies or something? Last month I had a brain MRI, and the moment a drop of the contrast touched my arm I started to scream from the pain (my arm felt like it was being held in a fire). I didn't even know it had touched me until they said they weren't doing anything (Brain MRI's are done with your head in a sort of "cage" laying on a table). Then last night I was having a Sobe Green Tea for refreshment for, um, let's just say I was married Sunday, ok? An hour later my throat started to close and it felt like I was being choked. My husband rushed me to Froedtert and they said I had an allergic reaction to the Green Tea (that was the only new thing I'd had). What can be causing this development in allergies?
Your body keeps changing as you age, it's just at a slower pace than childhood or teenagehood. I developed allergies in my early and mid-20s that I never had before.
Go to your allergist and ask for a full test - they will put a grid on your back and poke you with lots of needles to see which allergens you react to. Then you'll know what to avoid. Specific food and medical allergies can be a little harder to discover, but looks like you've already discovered a big one.
Keep in mind that stress (from big life changes such as weddings) can also make your symptoms worse.

Have you been exposed to these before? It may just be that you're finding new things that you've been allergic to all along, you just were never exposed to it. Also, allergies can get worse over time. I'm 44, and a few years ago I started getting hay fever for the first time in my life. I've also become allergic to morel mushrooms, even though I've eaten them all my life (my husband cooked a huge plateful of them for me, and I'd never had any more than one or two at a time before).

it could be the change of automsphere, if you recently moved or bought new furniture or really have not clean your hosue well. best thing you can do, is go see a specialist. like an allergic. let them do the test on you to see why all the sudden you are becoming allergic to things that in the past you weren't.
i am telling you form expriences. i had been surfering from migraines and asthma attacks since i was 18. i am 39 now. and just recently i got the famous test done about 4 months ago. found out i was allergic to anything airborne and roaches. the reason why i was getting soo many migraine attackes was not because of what i thought, but in fact they were allergic attacks which turned into migraines or severe asthama attack. i finally got the allergies under control. now i breath better, had not had a migraine attack in 4 months, i only have had one astham attack instead of one attack a week i used to suffer form and i am feeling much better.
by the way congrads on your marriage. and dont worry i dont think u are allergic to your husband, hehehehe

go to an allergist, it could be the best thing you do.
also nowadays, instead of doing the test on your back, like the old days, they do it on your arms and shoulders. it is much much less painful and easier to do and they do in two sessions, not one.

i can tell from my experience tat once body is exposed to one sort of allergy it starts attracting others. my aunt once used a hair dye of a reputable company on her, it exploded like an elephant head literally, now wenevr she is exposed to other kinds of chemicals (she is a chemistry teacher) she faces same reactions
